Hanabatake corresponds to the Sakuramachi-Hanabatake district of Kumamoto City. A city planning document ranks it, together with the area around the Tsuruya department store in Torimachi, as one of the city's two major commercial cores.
According to the city's planning document, the Kotsu Center bus hub is located in the district, and buses leave from it for the whole of Kumamoto Prefecture and other parts of Kyushu.
The same document notes that the Hanabatake residence, the centre of the domain's government, stood here in the Edo period. It treats Hanabatake as a district of commerce, administration and culture.
