Also known as chikusa-/-imaike-/-ikeshita
The Imaike and Ikeshita area in Nagoya's Chikusa Ward is a nightlife hub along the Higashiyama subway line. It's packed with hostess bars, girls bars, snack bars, and concept cafes, offering a local, down-to-earth night out.
Step out of Imaike subway station and you're greeted by a lively, distinctly Nagoya streetscape. Izakaya and snack bar neon spills into the back alleys, buzzing with local office workers and students.
The area centers on Imaike Station and stretches toward Ikeshita Station. It's compact and walkable, with restaurants and nightlife spots mixed together. Just 10 minutes by subway from Nagoya's main hub, Sakae.
The nightlife here is dominated by snack bars and girls bars. Around Imaike Station, over 100 snack bars cluster together, where mama-san chats with regulars. Girls bars have young female staff and a casual vibe. A few hostess bars (kyabakura) near Ikeshita offer reasonable prices. Concept cafes are also on the rise, drawing anime and game fans.
Price-wise, snack bars charge a cover of 1,000–2,000 yen, girls bars around 3,000 yen per hour, and hostess bars 5,000–8,000 yen per hour—cheaper than central Nagoya. Since it's more local than touristy, English is limited, but if you speak Japanese, you'll have a great time.
Access is easy via the Higashiyama Line: Imaike or Ikeshita stations. Weekends get busy, but weekdays are quiet. Casual dress is fine. Most snack bars don't require reservations, but for hostess bars, booking ahead is safer.
One tip: snack bars can be smoky. Also, girls bars rarely push extra drinks, but it's wise to check the menu prices first if you're new.
Chikusa / Imaike / Ikeshita runs on table-service venues: kyabakura (hostess clubs), girls bars, and snack bars. You pay a set fee by the hour, with nomination (shimei) and drink charges on top, so check each venue’s all-in price before you sit down.
Chikusa / Imaike / Ikeshita is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
Popular services in Chikusa / Imaike / Ikeshita include girls bars (flat drink charge, conversational setting), karaoke snack bars, and hostess clubs with shimei nomination options.
