Meieki / Nakamura Ward

Step out of Nagoya Station's ticket gate, and you're surrounded by massive station buildings and office towers. But just a few minutes' walk into the side streets, neon signs light up the night. Meieki / Nakamura Ward is Nagoya's largest terminal hub, yet its back alleys mix Showa-era snack bars with cutting-edge concept cafes.

The area splits into the west side (Nakamura Ward) and east side (Naka Ward) of the station. The west side has many commercial facilities connected to the station, but step inside and you'll find drinking streets. The "Meieki West" area is dense with old-school snack bars and small girls bars. In contrast, "Meieki East" on the station's east side is a nightlife district lined with large kyabakura hostess bars and host clubs.

At night, the main attractions are kyabakura and girls bars. The east side has some of Nagoya's largest kyabakura, with rates around ¥5,000–10,000 per hour. On the west side, alleys are dotted with affordable girls bars (around ¥3,000 per hour) and snack bars where you can chat with the mama. Recently, concept cafes themed around anime and games have also increased, drawing younger crowds.

Host clubs are concentrated on the east side, popular with foreigners wanting to experience Nagoya's host culture. Pricing can be complex, but many offer first-time deals of ¥2,000–5,000 per hour for drinks. Snack bars are mostly in older buildings on the west side, where you can enjoy karaoke and mingle with regulars.

Access is excellent—all within walking distance from Nagoya Station. But the area is large, so check your destination in advance. Weekends are crowded; weekdays are quieter. Many kyabakura and host clubs require reservations, so call or LINE ahead.

More places are becoming English-friendly, but snack bars and small girls bars may be Japanese-only. Always confirm pricing before entering to avoid scams. Police patrols are common, making it relatively safe, but avoid walking alone late at night.
