Kanayama is a nightlife district on the south side of Nagoya, packed with hostess bars, girls bars, and snack bars. The area around the station has many affordable options.
Exit the south gate of Kanayama Station and neon signs hit your eyes. Among Nagoya's nightlife districts, this one has a particularly casual drinking vibe.
Kanayama is a 5-minute train ride from Nagoya Station, served by the JR Tokaido Main Line, Meitetsu Nagoya Main Line, and the Subway Meijo Line. The area south of the station is the nightlife hub, with bars packed into back alleys.
The core of this area is hostess bars (kyabakura) and girls bars. Kyabakura run about 2,000–3,000 yen per 30 minutes, girls bars around 3,000 yen per hour—very affordable by Nagoya standards. There are also many snack bars with a nostalgic atmosphere.
There are over 100 establishments, mostly within a 5-minute walk from the station. A few concept cafes and lounges exist, but the main draw is table-service nightlife.
Access is excellent: one stop from Nagoya Station on JR. Last trains are around midnight, so plan to move early. Friday and Saturday nights are especially busy.
For foreign visitors, girls bars are the easiest entry point. More places have English menus, but Japanese may not be spoken, so learning a few phrases helps.
Kanayama runs on table-service venues: kyabakura (hostess clubs), girls bars, and snack bars. You pay a set fee by the hour, with nomination (shimei) and drink charges on top, so check each venue’s all-in price before you sit down.
Kanayama is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
Popular services in Kanayama include girls bars (flat drink charge, conversational setting), karaoke snack bars, and hostess clubs with shimei nomination options.
