Also known as minato-mirai
Minato Mirai is Yokohama's waterfront district, home to upscale hostess bars, girls bars, and snack bars. Popular with tourists, it offers nightlife with stunning night views.
Minato Mirai at night is a blend of sea breeze and neon. The waterfront area, with its Ferris wheel reflecting on the water, transforms from daytime shopping malls and amusement parks into an adult playground.
The area spreads around JR Sakuragicho Station and Minato Mirai Line stations. Landmark Tower, Queen's Square, and other high-rises line the wide, orderly streets. It's safe for nighttime strolls, bustling with couples and groups.
Nightlife centers on hostess bars (kyabakura) and girls bars. Over 20 hostess bars dot the area, with prices ranging from ¥8,000 to ¥15,000 per hour—higher end for Yokohama. Girls bars are more casual, around ¥3,000–¥5,000 per hour. There are also a few snack bars frequented by locals. Concept cafes and lounges are increasing, adding variety.
Hostess bars cluster in the so-called "Minato Mirai Hostess Bar Street," a five-minute walk from Sakuragicho Station, where signs crowd the building fronts. Girls bars are around Queen's Square and down side streets. Snack bars hide on second floors of office buildings away from the station.
Access is excellent: within walking distance of JR Sakuragicho Station and multiple Minato Mirai Line stations. If driving, coin parking is plentiful, but don't drink and drive. Taxis are easy to find.
Best time is after 9 PM on Fridays and Saturdays. Reservations are essential for hostess bars. Girls bars accept walk-ins but get crowded on weekends. Few places have English menus or cater to foreigners, so check ahead if you don't speak Japanese.
Minato Mirai runs on table-service venues: kyabakura (hostess clubs), girls bars, and snack bars. You pay a set fee by the hour, with nomination (shimei) and drink charges on top, so check each venue’s all-in price before you sit down.
Minato Mirai is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
Popular services in Minato Mirai include girls bars (flat drink charge, conversational setting), karaoke snack bars, and hostess clubs with shimei nomination options.
