Osaka's nightlife splits into two centres: Kita (Umeda and Kitashinchi) and Minami (Namba and Shinsaibashi), linked by the Osaka Metro Midosuji line, with smaller bar districts around the stations in between.

Think of Osaka's nightlife as two cores, north and south. Kita is Umeda, where JR Osaka Station and the Osaka Metro and private-railway Umeda stations cluster, plus Kitashinchi just south of it. Minami runs from Namba Station (Nankai, Kintetsu and the subway) through Dotonbori to Shinsaibashi. Both have hostess clubs (kyabakura), girls bars, snack bars, lounges, concept cafes and host clubs.
Between and around the two cores are station-front districts with their own character: Hommachi, Fukushima, Juso, Tennoji/Abeno, Nipponbashi, Tsuruhashi, Kyobashi/Miyakojima, Nakatsu and Morinomiya/Tamatsukuri. Fukushima, 1 km west of Umeda, is known as a restaurant street; Juso, where three Hankyu lines cross, packs small eating and drinking places around the station. Pick an area from the list below.
Kita and Minami sit on one straight line of the Osaka Metro Midosuji line (Umeda, Shinsaibashi, Namba), which also runs to Shin-Osaka. From Kansai International Airport, Nankai trains reach Namba and JR trains reach Tennoji and Osaka Station; from Itami Airport, limousine buses run to Umeda and Namba.
Osaka City has had a touting ordinance since 2014. On any public road in the city it is illegal to tout someone who has refused, or to block or follow passers-by. Since October 2014, parts of Minami and Kita are designated no-touting zones where touting is banned outright, with a fine of up to 50,000 yen for ignoring an order; Kitashinchi has been a priority patrol district since November 2018. Do not follow anyone who approaches you; choose your venue yourself.

Osaka City is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
