Namba and Shinsaibashi are the heart of Minami, Osaka's southern downtown. Restaurants and neon line both banks of the Dotonbori canal and the Shinsaibashi-suji arcade, right outside Namba Station on the Nankai, Kintetsu and Osaka Metro lines.
Dotonbori is right outside Namba Station on the Nankai and Kintetsu railways; on Osaka Metro use Namba on the Midosuji, Sennichimae or Yotsubashi line. Shinsaibashi is one stop north of Namba on the Midosuji line, straight through from Umeda. From Kansai International Airport, Nankai trains run to Namba without a change.
Dotonbori began as a canal dug in 1612 with funding from Yasui Doton, and theatres and kabuki made it an entertainment quarter. The giant three-dimensional signs, Glico and the Kani-Doraku crab among them, still line the water, and the stretch from Ebisubashi bridge along the Tombori Riverwalk stays busy late. North through the Shinsaibashi-suji arcade is Shinsaibashi: shopping by day, back for drinks at night.
The night venues are thickest south of the canal, from Soemoncho to Sennichimae, and in the office blocks east of Shinsaibashi. Hostess clubs (kyabakura), girls bars, snack bars, lounges, concept cafes and host clubs share multi-tenant buildings, so check the signboard for the name and floor before going up.
Parts of Minami, including Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi-suji, are a no-touting zone under Osaka City's ordinance. Street touting is banned outright; ignoring an order means a fine of up to 50,000 yen and publication of the offender's name. Do not follow anyone who approaches you. Check the price board for the hourly set fee, nomination (shimei) fee and drink charges before you go in.
