The Sumiyoshi area includes the surroundings of Sumiyoshi Taisha shrine and its station, Sumiyoshitaisha on the Nankai Main Line.
The tourism bureau puts Sumiyoshi Taisha 3 minutes on foot towards the east from the Nankai Main Line stop at Sumiyoshitaisha. The NK08 stop, Sumiyoshitaisha, belongs to Nankai's line and offers transfers to the Hankai and Uemachi tram lines.
The Osaka tourism bureau describes the shrine as the national head of the Sumiyoshi shrine network found throughout Japan. Not a single venue is listed for Sumiyoshi yet. Once registrations begin they will be displayed here; in the meantime the Osaka City page shows the city's listings, which by area are under Fukushima, Hommachi, Umeda, Juso and Namba/Shinsaibashi.
Within Osaka City a municipal ordinance governs touting. On roads named as prohibited zones, no business is allowed to tout in principle, and the city says it responds first with guidance, then a recommendation and then an order, with a non-criminal fine of up to 50,000 yen for anyone who still does not comply.
Sumiyoshi is generally fine for a night out. The main risk is bottakuri, a padded bill at the end. Stick to venues that post their prices, skip street touts steering you into ‘free’ bars, and confirm the set fee plus any nomination or bottle charges before you order.
